OUR FLEA CONTROL

We wanted a replacement for the toxic flea controls on the market. It had to be effective, easy to use and SAFE. The atomized preparation proved useful for long-haired cats and getting to those hard-to-reach places! The Flea Control ingredients are also useful in preventing irritation from the bite

A truly healthy animal has the ability to withstand most of the flea issues of today. However, many now face commercial diets, vaccinations, environmental pollution, lack of mental and physical exercise, stress and chemical pet products. Their whole system lacks vitality, the immune system is compromised and their major defense mechanism, the skin, no longer has the ability to go into battle with the saliva of the common flea! It is believed that flea saliva is responsible for many allergies – consider that it may be the susceptibility of the animal to the saliva that is the problem!

An adult flea’s lifespan is about four months, during which time they lay eggs continuously (on your pet they may look like salt crystals). These hatch into larvae, which seek nooks and crannies around your home to pupate a week later. The pupae then hatch into small fleas in another two weeks and look for the nearest meal – usually your pet! The fleas discarded meals of blood form little dried specks of blood known as ‘flea dirt’.

How can you ensure a ‘flea free’ pet?

  • Firstly, get rid of that flea collar – many of them contain organophosphates, carbamates and organochlorines. These powerful poisons can cause salivation, vomiting, convulsions, tremors and cancer. I have reservations about herbal collars too. The animal’s sense of smell is so acute that anything with an odour hung around its neck so close to its nose must be quite distressing.

  • Change the diet – fleas are definitely more attracted to pets fed kibble. Use real food! Fresh raw meat and cooked vegetables, herbs (if you have dandelion leaves, couch, chickweed, puha, or cleavers growing in your yard, chop them finely and add to the meal), garlic (a small clove daily for the medium size dog), a dash of organic apple cider vinegar and fresh fruit for treats.

  • “Flee Flea” is a powder which is added to your pet’s diet. This contains dolomite, which has the perfect balance of calcium and phosphorus for your growing pup’s bones. The sulphur in it is an excellent skin tonic and may prevent coat matting in both the cat and dog. There is a little garlic too so no need to supplement this.

  • Throw out the chemical washes – slice a lemon and include it with the peel in two litres of near-boiling water. Steep overnight, then add a drop of eucalyptus oil to the brew and sponge onto your pet, allowing it to dry. If your pet enjoys swimming, encourage this to drown the fleas.

  • Invest in a flea comb. Comb through the coat then wipe the comb on a damp paper towel. Leave the fur/hair on the towel as the fleas will try and hide in it rather than hop all over the place

  • Wash the animal’s bedding with a few drops of eucalyptus in the rinse water.  Hang out to dry on hot sunny day (heat kills fleas and their eggs and fleas hate eucalyptus).

  • Sprinkle some Diatomaceous Earth on outside grassy areas where your pet sleeps (this dries up the fleas). If your pets’ favourite sleeping spot is a bare dirt patch, cover it on hot sunny day with black polythene. This ‘bakes’ any fleas or eggs. Keep your lawn short so that the sunlight can penetrate to the flea eggs.

  • Inside your home – arrange some small leafy branches of eucalyptus behind your TV and sofa and under your beds. Use eucalyptus oil in your incense burner and in an atomiser to spray in those ‘hard-to-reach’ places. Steam cleaning your carpet is an effective way of killing flea eggs if you have a severe infestation. Place a few drops of eucalyptus in your vac bag before vacuuming to catch the live fleas.

Every client who has made some meaningful changes to their pets diet and opted for non-chemical flea, worm, and vaccination control, has noticed their pets no longer have a problem with fleas,  even of there is still the odd one around.
