TRAVEL SICKNESS PREVENTION
Part of the ‘socialisation’ of your pet is with the car. Do not let the pet associate the vehicle with any negative emotion for example if the only time pet goes in the car is to the vet this may not have the best outcome!

Get the pet used to vehicle motion. Start with just going around the vehicle, sitting in it and playing a little game, make it ‘fun’. When your pet is comfortable with this, start the vehicle (but DON’T put it in motion). When pet is used to this, gently go forwards and backwards a few metres. Again when comfortable with this, a SMALL trip, say around the neighbourhood. Try to make each initial trip an interesting, rewarding one for your pet. Ensure the vehicle is adequately ventilated.

Don’t put pet in the boot – fumes may kill. Provide water and adequate ventilation. It is highly recommended that you secure your pet with a harness to prevent them interfering with driving or suffering injury in
an accident. Pets that like to sit on your lap whilst driving or with your passenger will not be able to be restrained should you stop in a hurry. They then end up under the dash or through the windscreen.
Consider the pet’s likes and dislikes – they may prefer a darkened crate or a crate with a view. Ensure crate is secured with a seat belt for safety as it can become a lethal weapon in an accident. A crated dog and you are also safer; if an accident should happen and you are injured, you want your rescuers to be able to help you and not be put off by a dog protecting you with bared teeth!

If having to crate the animal for travel get the pet used to it as a ‘good place to be’, at least a few days beforehand. It is not a good practice to have the dog with their head out the window even if they enjoy it – eyes and ears can suffer, they can inhale the fumes from other vehicles and they risk injury from any flying debris or insects.

Do not feed before travel or give sedatives – if your pet vomits you may not be there to prevent them inhaling the vomit. The NATPET Travel Drops allow the pet to cope with any stress whilst travelling.
